Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of one of the grandest movies ever made, Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor. The film took over two years to complete, costing $44 million to make (adjusted for inflation, roughly $300 million today), with 79 sets, and 26,000 costumes built.
The costume budget for Taylor's costumes alone was $194,000 (adjusted for inflation, roughly $1,440,000 today). The film costumes are the work of three highly acclaimed designers, Renie Conley, Vittorio Nino Novarese and Irene Sharaff, earning them a shared Academy Award.
Just imagine the army of people it would have taken to clothe the stars, let alone the throngs of extras. Below is just a small sneak peek at the behind the scenes world of Cleopatra's costumes.
